Design is not a cosmetic add-on but an integral part of the communication process. I believe it should be considered throughout the process, beginning with the original assigning of the story.

As a consultant, I work with writers, editors and designers on a redesign, as well as with the ad staff and the production staff. Everyone has to be on the same page to make a re-design project work. The idea is to tell a story that quickly and easily engages readers. The best way to do that is to avoid locking yourself into a "words-only" mode. The best way may include a list or a map or an information graphic. The planning process needs to include a way for all this to happen.

Some people refer to this as the W-E-D process, with which the publication "weds" the Writers, Editors and Designers into teams that work together on stories, rather than pass it on from one to the other in assembly line fashion.
